Lib expects to find a reasonable explanation for the girl’s strange behavior, her faith in science and medicine flying in the face of the religious fervor that otherwise grips the small rural community. A local board has been assembled to assess whether or not this little girl is a saint in the making, and to that end, they’ve hired the nurse and a local nun to watch her every hour of the day and report back on their findings. Anna O’Donnell, an Irish child, allegedly hasn’t had a bite to eat in months, yet she still survives. Science and religion are two warring philosophies, and they come into abrupt conflict in The Wonder, when a young nurse, Lib Wright, (played by Florence Pugh) is sent to Ireland to observe a bona fide miracle. Stars: Viola Davis, Thuso Mdebu, John Boyega.Viola Davis may have missed out on an Academy Award nomination for her performance in The Woman King, but that doesn’t make this film any less worthy of praise. The fight sequences are bold and energetic, aided by vivid costumes and a powerful score. The Woman King examines the power dynamics of African empires before European colonization, and it does so without sacrificing an ounce of thrilling action along the way. This army is led by the fierce Nanisca (Viola Davis) as she trains a new cohort of soldiers, including the strong-willed Nawi (Thuso Mbedu). Set amidst the 19th-century African kingdom of Dahomey (located in present-day Benin), The Woman King revolves around the Agojie, a group of female warriors who have pledged to protect their people and their king (played by John Boyega). Stars: Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes.Easy A is a great teen comedy, but it also has a lot to say about the double-edged sword facing high school girls, who are often considered either prudish or promiscuous, with absolutely nothing in between. But becoming the school harlot ends up being more trouble than she bargains for. They’re probably going to do it anyway, so she might as well make a little money off it, and plus, it’s not like she really needs her pristine reputation. A clever play on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Easy A revolves around a teenage girl (Stone) who realizes that she can charge money for allowing boys at her school to lie about their sexual exploits with her. Heralding a new golden age of teen sex comedies, Easy A is a star-making vehicle for Emma Stone in the lead role. Stars: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman.Come for Alan Rickman as a classically trained actor who experiences actual physical pain when he has to recite his character’s catchphrase, stay for Red Shirt Guy (Sam Rockwell) finally getting his moment in the sun. But when the ragtag team of out-of-work actors is mistaken for their TV characters by a group of real aliens, they have to use all their sci-fi know-how to save the day. He played the commander of an intergalactic spaceship, but is now mostly doing conventions and paid appearances, and has a relationship with his former co-stars that borders on hostile. Tim Allen stars as the arrogant, over-the-hill lead of a 1980s television show called Galaxy Quest. Taking a playful swing at Star Trek and its wide array of familiar sci-fi genre tropes, Galaxy Quest is a pitch-perfect satire of both a space adventure series and the fandom that is built around it.
